RadioIndy is pleased to present The Men They Couldn't Shave
with a GrIndie Award for their CD "Stories from Cactus Motel"

"Stories from Cactus Motel" by the humorously named The Men They Couldn't Shave is a pleasant collection of well-crafted acoustic/country tunes. Majestic acoustic guitars serve as this CD's strongest captivator and draw listeners in with a tight grasp. "Up North" stands out for just this reason; its graceful acoustic intro quickly becomes etched into one's memory. Moreover, the vocals on this album are refreshingly unique, adequately raw, and compellingly emotional. Lyrically, The Men They Couldn't Shave brings a nice mix to the table – a little bit of wit, a lot of relevance, and a nice dose of introspection. Other standout tracks include "The Ballad of Old Henri P.," "Ghost Dance Shirt," and the hilarious "A Tough Man Left Town." All in all, "Stories from Cactus Motel" is fun, highly relatable, and musically outstanding.

Reviews of "Stories From Cactus Motel" are tickin' in to Mr. Old Henri P's headquarters. Here is the review in Romerikes Blad. Mr. Old Henri P doesn't usually comment on reviews the band receives, but he is pleased with this one. "The man seems to know what he is writing about", Old Henri P says. "But of course the dice should be a 5", he adds before getting back to work. http://www.rb.no/lokal_kultur/article2634704.ece

Stars were shining and moonshine flowing at the gig in Løten last weekend.
The band delivered a tight set and Mr. Mo Larsen was actually seen dancing with the crowd by the end of the set.
We’re getting ready to record at a cabin by the sea mid-september. Time to finish up the rest of Stories from Cactus Motel.
Mr. Jan Peeters is also about to knock out a few new songs for the band to wrestle with. Stay tuned.

August 15th
Summer moved on and the band is back in the saddle.
This weekend we play a gig in Løten, just outside Hamar City.

The Men They Couldn’t Shave were also asked to play a few songs at the wedding
of our friend and painter Unni Askeland this weekend. Unfortunately we were already booked.
We enter the stage at Løten around 22:30. The band Blodsbrødre is filling in for
Backstreet Girls that night. See you around.

Also, we want to congratulate our friends in Bedrock Bluesband.
They won a battle of the bands at Notodden Bluesfestival a few weeks back.

And another musical friend – Mona Grytøyr – is at spot six on Norsktoppen.

June 26th
An exciting springtime is over and the dusty commune is taking a short break from playing live this summer.
Travels and workshops and vacation is the reason. But the mixing of the live album and the dvd is going on.
And Mr. Jan Peeters is busy writing melodies to Mr. Mo Larsen’s lyrics.
And the band will kick off the work with a new record in the fall.
The album “Stories from Cactus Motel” is also taking shape. Two songs and we can call it a wrap.

Thank you to all the people who’ve been watching us play live this winter and spring.
We’ve made many new friends and we’ll keep on keepin’ on in the fall.

Dusty summer greetings from The Men They Couldn’t Shave

June 15th
Our gig at Byfesten in Lillestrøm went well.
The venue was filled with familiar faces and faces we’ve never seen before.
We’re gathering new friends as we keep on keepin’ on down the dusty Nordicana road.
Everything is now ready for our show with Åge Aleksandersen in Jessheim on June 23rd.

The work with the live material from kulturhuset in may is progressing,
but it takes time to coordinate the film footage and the live recording.
But our technicians say the material to work with is very good
 – we hope a live recording and a concert documentary is about to become reality in near future.

We hit the stage at rådhusplassen, Jessheim June 23rd at 19.00.

Hope to see you there

May 29th
The Men They Couldn’t Shave will play live at Byfesten in Lillestrøm on Wednesday June 14th.
The stage is close to Vinmonopolet in Storgata in Lillestrøm.

The band hits the stage around 9.00 p.m.

Also: The sound on the recording made at Kulturhuset on May 10th is excellent.
Good enough for a live record at some point.
But the work with finishing the record “Stories from Cactus Motel” comes first, these days.

The film shoot also came out nicely and is in progress.

May 15th
The gig at Kulturhuset is history.
The Men They Couldn’t Shave would like to thank each and every one who made it.
The official saying is that the place was full. Thank you and see you next time, hopefully!!

kulturhuset, Jessheim that night.

Mr. Brian Tierney

We don’t know just yet where we’ll end up mixing the songs. But it will be a job well done. Guaranteed.
42nd Street Electric Fox will hopefully be out this side of X-mas.

And go and watch Jason Ringenberg at Gamla on October 8th. He is part of the Cowboy & Indianer Weekend in Oslo,
where a bunch of great acts will do some musical barnstorming in the land of Americana. We are all looking forward to that.

August 26th
Summer moved on, and the boys are back in business. Gig in the rain at Jessheimdagene went well, and the work inside Botten Vintage Plant is paying off. Two albums close to being done. Ms. Stina Stenerud has put in great work with her beautiful voice, and other collaborators have added steel guitar and sax. Mr. Bad Boy Botten is controlling the process with steady hands and encouragement, and the songs are turning out even better than we hoped they would, actually. Exciting times approaching. Stay tuned. Great songs heading in your direction soon.

June 29th
Suddenly we realized that our two upcoming albums are close to being completed. Mr. Bad Boy Botten, Mr. Mo Larsen and the chief of tunes Mr. Jan Peeters have spent two days and one entire night at Botten Vintage Plant. Vocal tracks and guitar fills and banjo and mandolin are down on tape, friends. Now, background vocals and some more fills remain. We’re headin’ out for a summer break and will return from the land of lost rivers and get at it again in August or so. Have a nice one out there.

June 20th
Tjernfestivalen was a success for the people putting the whole thing together. The Men They Couldn’t Shave want to congratulate all the hard working people. As for our gig, we delivered a tight set, but we can assure all good people out there that you are in for a surprise the next time you watch us play live. Until next time, have a dusty summer out on the plains.

June 6th
A hard rain’s a-gonna fall. And it did. Saturday’s event was washed away, but the horsethieves did their thing on stage. And we found shelter from the storm after the event. Great experience and we’d love to come back again sometime. Now, however, we’re looking ahead.

Tjernfestivalen at Nordbytjernet, Jessheim on June 18th.

And, we’re still working on the new songs at Botten Vintage Plant. Things are taking shape. And they sound good too. Stay tuned and keep the trigger happy.

Good news: We’re scheduled to play on Musikkens dag in Oslo on June 4th. Details will follow regarding when and exactly where. Mr. J.H. Peeters has laid down some damn good guitar work on many of the songs. And Mr. Mo Larsen has nailed a few vocal tracks. It all sounds promising, folks…

April 11th
The work at Botten Vintage Plant is going well. It seems like we’ve got enough material for two separate albums. We’ll see what happens. We’re aiming for release of one of the albums late fall 2005, but that might change. Check out the events-link. We’re so far scheduled to play four gigs, the first one on May 14th. Stay tuned.

March 21st
Long weekend for hard-working men on drums and bass. The boys nailed 12 or 13 songs during three days, working night and day. The rest of the gang hung out in the trailer outside Botten Vintage Studio. The result turned out quite well. Next one plugging in, is Mr. Jan and his guitars. Good luck, mister. And happy Easter holiday.

March 15th
We’ve been busy preparing for the upcoming weekend. We are about to kick off the first session of recording with the entire band present. Eager and ready, indeed. Bad Boy Botten has slept in the recording studio for the past two weeks to prepare for the upcoming session.

January 18th
We played three songs at the fundraiser at Baråtti this weekend. The concert itself was a success, with 350-400 people in the crowd. Good music, good crowd. We’re scheduled for recording in the middle of March.

Rehearsals are still going well. Mr. Mo Larsen bought himself a banjo over Christmas. Good lord…

January 13th
Some acoustic outtakes are on tape, and we’re just about to start recording with a full band. We’re scheduled to take part in a fundraiser at Baråtti, Strømmen, Norway January 14th. The gig supports the victims from the flood in Asia.

October 4th
Rehearsals going well. Ten songs are scheduled for the recording session late October. The new songs still sound dusty, but there is quite a bit of variation in the batch of melodies Mr. Jan has come up with. Stay tuned.

We’re back on track, and are rehearsing for two upcoming gigs: Biker Blow Out at Bruvollen, Blaker, Norway on June 4th, and warming up for CC Cowboys on June 12th, Barkaaker, Norway. We’ll be happy to see you there, and we sound tighter than ever.

April 6th
A while back, we decided to enter the studio and begin the recording of five of the new songs. That’s what we’ve been busy doing. Drums and bass sound very good. January 12th
We started recording the first song on our new album last weekend. A strange tune that inspired the multi-talented mr. Skoveng to pick up his accordian. Jan played the guitar beautifully, and we concluded that the first step toward a full album, was a successful one. Indeed. We are excited about this journey. Indeed.

January 7th
We are entering the recording studio this weekend to get the songs for the new album down on tape. Getting ready to do some live gigs, too. The first one is January 30th. Roots in Strømmen. Headliners is Vestlandsfanden.

Time’s not standing still, The Men They Couldn’t Shave are not standing still. Since the last update, things have changed. A mysterious dude, Mr. K., has put in financial support so that the album will be printed and mastered in a professional way, just like the album deserves. But most importantly, you can now get a taste of what the album will be like. Go to Mp3 and listen to the song “Hard to read your mind”. Now how about that? We’ll be back with news later. Things are beginning to move fast.

Lucky us, we can't ride the riddles on all the foreheads we see. 12 songs more or less ready for mastering. Only details remaining. We've tested out some of the songs on people we know in the desert of life, and they all say that these songs are ready for the world - and they will be available somewhere down the road. Be patient. Looks like our first gig with the new material is booked. Where and when will be posted soon. Jan and Roy have spent a couple of days inside to work on details. They came out smiling.

The transcendent Mr. Botten is still busy in the basement of magic. Message is that the work is progressing, but that he refuses to come out until the whole album is ready for the world - and the world is ready for the album. But the atmosphere is optimistic behind the locked door. Mr. Botten is letting Jan inside tomorrow. The two of them plan to listen critically to the songs that are mixed so far. We'll keep you posted.

Yeah, 12 musical chapters of The Men They Couldn't Shave are now recorded. The transcendent Mr. Botten has locked himself inside the basement of Botten Studio. The rest of us are ordered to bring coffee every two hours as he is busy finding the right sound on the songs. A long process ahead, but the man with a tambourine inside his head is the man to get it on track. Ooops, gotta run, mr. Botten needs more coffee in his harmonica. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the process. We're a couple of months away from the finished album "Ragin' Butterflies".

The transcendent Mr. Botten came awake when Mo and Jan knocked on his door and told him to get dressed and head down to the studio. The two travellers knew that magic would happen this day - and it did. Vocal tracks from mr. Mo were right on the spot, and he sang 'till goosebumps took over the place. Then Jan did background vocals that were equally good, and suddenly we realized that the album is almost finished. Headin' into the mix, and Mr. Botten is sharpening his ears and fingers to get the dirty work done. More news coming soon. This album is more than we expected. And we expected a lot.

Gifts consumed and our attention once again is on the work unfinished on the songs becoming the album "Ragin' Butterflies". Today we finished the vocals on three songs, and the atmosphere inside was good today. We were all in the critical mood, and what we did made it through the Botten-Peeters' critical filter - which means that three songs are more or less done and ready for the mix. "Hard to read your mind" and "Kick the ragged man", two of our most upbeat tunes on this album look extremely promising. A day's rest now. More ground to be covered in a couple of days.

X-mas arrived and we all met Santa Claus halfway there. But the work in Botten Studios had to be taken care of. Jan, Dag and Roy spent half a day inside and nailed the takes left on guitar that day. Now, all is ready to for the vocal tracks, really what  remains for the album to be ready for the mix.

Mo just almost finished his vocal yesterday! Great job, mister!!

 11. December 2002
The band has spent long evenings in the studio the past month, and things are looking good. The sound is great and the songs are beginning to take shape for real. Varied songs - mellow goldmines and hurricanes on speed. Roy, Jan and Oeyvind are soon ready to record some vocal tracks, but in our world time ain't money. Slowly, slowly toward perfection. More updates coming soon.

20. November 2002
We are recording our first full-length CD at Botten Studio. 12 new songs, penned down by Jan and Øyvind. Estimated release is march 2003.
